A routine Saturday evening took a terrifying turn when a 16-year-old girl was arrested after a handgun she was handling accidentally discharged, injuring a one-year-old boy. The incident, which initially caused confusion about its location, eventually led police to a residence on Howard Street.

It all began around 7:47 p.m. on August 31, 2024, when officers were dispatched to South Bluff Park following reports of a shooting involving a child. Upon arrival, police discovered that the actual shooting occurred elsewhere, leading them to the Howard Street residence. The young victim had already been taken to a local hospital by the time officers arrived, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As the investigation unfolded, police learned that the 16-year-old girl was in a bedroom, handling a handgun when it discharged, striking the one-year-old. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening, but the situation was no less alarming.

The teen was arrested on charges of injury to a child with a weapon and was taken to the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center for booking. The handgun involved in the incident was recovered by police.

Thankfully, the young boy is expected to recover, but the consequences of this momentary lapse will likely impact all involved for a long time.
