Here, Then Gone

At this point you may or may not have seen the double-decker "Megabus" vehicles on the streets or highways of Texas. One thing is for sure, you aren't seeing them anymore. It appears that Megabus quit serving routes in Texas as of last week.

A message to the company was returned with the following statement:

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however routes operating between Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston will be discontinued as of August 16th, 2024."

What You Missed

The buses provided lost cost transportation along these major routes and certainly looked like a fun ride. A bus in general can be a "hard sell" to many people and it looks like they couldn't make a go of it. Judging from their "Journey Planner" it looks like the company is completely out of the southwest as well as California. There still appears to be a lot of routes available in the north and especially the northeast.

How It Operates

Megabus is best described as a private, low-fare bus service.Texas is a huge place, and getting across it can be a grind. Megabus operated like an airline with big discounts for those who booked in advance. It seems like routes back and forth between major Texas cities would actually make the buses a hot ticket, but the company could not find a way to make it work. It's a shame that this option is no longer available for those with limited funds.
