Lubbock’s Quirky Culture Of Silent Judgment Revealed
Don't get me wrong, guys. Lubbock is a friendly place. We all wave, hold the door open for one another, and say "sir" and "ma'am" like our mama's are watching. But, even still, all of us are absolutely judging one another silently and, albeit, politely, usually from inside our cars or between the folds in our blinds...
You do it. I do it. We all do it. It's human nature.
Shopping Woes
For example, if you're a United Supermarkets person, you're probably judging your H-E-B and Costco pals. Lord knows nobody prefers Walmart, but we all end up there whether we like it or not. We may not say anything out loud about your shopping preferences, but we are certainly drawing strong conclusions from them...
Clothing Nos
Then, there's how you dress for the weather. If it's 35 degrees and you're in shorts, we are probably judging. If it's 65 and you are bundled up like we're in Alaska, also judging. There's a very specific and hardly discussed temperature-to-hoodie ratio in Lubbock, and violating it just makes people uneasy...
Driving Uh-Ohs
Driving habits are a HUGE one here, too. You are being judged every single time you hit the streets of Lubbock for a cruise. Did you use your turn signal? Did you slow down to let the old lady in the PT Cruiser get in front of you? Or, are you a jerk? We are watching. We are judging. Don't be a douche.
Coffee Pros
We judge coffee loyalty, too. Your order, where you get it, and how seriously you take it. The same goes for gas stations. If you’re weirdly passionate about one specific location, we notice.
Music Foes
Music taste matters more than we admit. What you play with your windows down says a lot, and yes, we heard it at the red light. We’re not mad. We’re just…aware. Do better.
Listen, none of this is malicious. It's just community bonding. Quiet judgment is a love language here. It's the glue that holds us together. We won't confront you, and we won't unfollow you, but we will always remember. Stay alert! Ha.
