The news that the Wyler Aerial Tramway was going to close to the public for the foreseeable future came as a shock to the El Paso community. The announcement was made last month and it took everyone by surprise. Equally surprising was the reason.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which has run the tram for the past 19 years, released a statement that said they were being forced to close down the tram to the public because an engineering analysis that was done before a planned maintenance project showed that even though the tram had passed annual inspections, it was not safe. The tram has been around for almost 60 years, but it was not intended to be used for that length of time and it didn't have updated safety features.

There was a glimmer of hope that the tram might be able to be updated to the tune of $2 million, but upon further inspection, a Colorado tram engineering company said it would likely be more along the lines of $7 million.

Because it doesn't look like there is going to be a reopening anytime soon, Wyler Aerial Tramway officials have decided to hold a sidewalk sale and sell off memorabilia. It could be your only chance to get Tramway items for a very long time.

The sale will be Saturday, October 27, 2018, 10 a.m. – noon at the Wyler Aerial Tramway,
1700 McKinley Avenue. Depending on how things go with this sale, officials say there might be another sale, but I'm guessing there won't be anything left.

Here are a couple of items that will be on sale. You can check out more on their Facebook page:
