What Is A Meme?

Ok, I know I'm old.  There's nothing I can do about that, but I do try and keep up with the young folks and their lingo, but I gotta admit, I had no idea what a 'meme' is.  And after looking it up, I'm still not sure what it is...

According to Urban Dictionary, a meme is a "an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media)."

Waht?

Then why is this a meme?

So, now I know what these things are called, but I still don't know if I could explain why they're called that to anyone.

Oh well - let's just enjoy another meme.  And don't laugh at old folks like me when I ask what the hell a meme is....
