Weekend Shooting in Berino Leaves One Victim Hospitalized
The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Saturday evening incident in Berino that was initially reported as a drive by shooting.
The incident happened in the 100 block of Feathergrass Lane, when witnesses said a woman arrived in a vehicle with 5 other people in it to a house party. One of the younger passengers got out of the vehicle and began arguing with another woman who was at the party. During the argument, an unknown man went into the house and returned outside with a rifle. Witnesses said he then fired one round into the ground.
It was then that the woman who exited the vehicle then returned to the car as it began to drive away. As the driver of the vehicle was leaving, the same unknown man chased the vehicle and fired two additional rounds, one of which hit the driver of the vehicle in the back. Another round shattered the rear glass of the vehicle.
The people in the vehicle flagged down a sheriff’s deputy who was in the vicinity, and victim was later airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso. The case is believed to be gang-related as the shooting is under investigation, and charges are pending.
