I love classic movies. I blog about them, I go to the Plaza Classic Film Festival and see as many of their showings as possible. But there is a certain genre of classic movies that I really adore because they were made at a time when anything went and all kinds of subject matters were touched on before Hollywood was, in effect, censored.

Pre-code movies were made between 1929 and 1934. They had sex, violence, drug-use, nudity, adultery - pretty much any sin or bad behavior you can think of, these movies had it. They also had some surreal topics like the one in the movie being shown for free on Saturday at the International Museum of Art.

'Gabriel Over the White House' was made in 1933 when the country was deep in the grips of the Depression. People were really scared and really angry at the way the country was being run, and this movie was seen as comment on the situation. Walter Huston plays a politician who is elected President via shady deals and backroom corruption. He is a horrible president and his policies nearly destroy the country. After he is injured in a bad car accident, the Archangel Gabriel comes to him and when he comes to, he has completely turned around. He becomes a crusader for the little man, fires all of his corrupt cronies, and turns the country around.

It is such an amazing movie, especially in this crazy political season, and only 87 minutes in run length. Go see this movie!
