The final moments of a Ft. Bliss soldier’s life captured on video from inside the El Paso County Jail has gone viral on the Internet and his tragic death is gaining national attention. The video obtained by KFOX14 only after fighting for its release all the way to the Texas attorney general's office sheds new light on the events that led to his untimely death while in custody.

In July of 2012, Sgt. James Brown walked into the El Paso County Jail to serve a two day court imposed DWI sentence in lieu of paying the fine. He left the detention center later that day on a gurney, and was subsequently pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

In a statement to KFOX 14, El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles maintains Brown’s death was caused by a pre-existing medical condition, as per the autopsy report. His family is suing the county for unspecified damages, claiming violation of the American with Civil Liberties Act. A federal civil trial is expected to go to court in October.
