Over the years I have interviewed members of the UTEP Athletics Department and asked them if the Miners would ever get a new football helmet. The answer was always the same. "It's too expensive to buy $100 helmets at $300 each so we will stay with our orange helmets."

Either the school found a $30,000 donor or they reached into their budget to finally give fans something else to get excited about. Friday (Sep. 2), UTEP released images of a brand new football helmet that they will be wearing Saturday night against New Mexico State in the Battle of I-10.

The helmet is matte blue with a large pick in orange and silver outline. If the Miners play as well as they look on the field, 2016 should be a season to remember.
