The Texas-El Paso Miners win the first game of the 2020 season against Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

On Saturday night, the UTEP Miners squared off against Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at the Sun Bowl with a handful of fans present.

For almost half the evening UTEP Miners trailed behind Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks up until Deion Hankins ran 10 yards for a touchdown right before the end of the half and scoring another touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter.

Deion Hankins who is a proud Parkland graduate really came through last night – the all-time leading rusher made a huge impact in the game rushing for 113 yards and totaling 2 touchdowns for opening night and making the final score, 14-24, Miners.

Half of the college games this year have been wiped out due to the ongoing novel coronavirus including the Miners' original schedule. However, while college football conferences have opted for a shorter schedule, the UTEP Miners have agreed on a 12-game schedule.

The Miners have been struggling for years but maybe the new team's defense approach and players such as Hankins can lead this college football team to overall victory. After all, anything is possible especially in the year 2020.

UTEP's 2020 schedule:

  • @ Texas Longhorns (Sept. 11)
  • vs. Abilene Christian (Sept. 19)
  • @ ULM (Sept. 11)
  • @ LA Tech (Oct. 10)
  • vs. Southern Miss (Oct. 17)
  • @ Charlotte (Oct. 24)
  • vs. North Texas (Oct. 31)
  • vs. FIU (Nov. 7)
  • @ UTSA (Nov. 14)
