On May 23, I-10 was shut down for almost an entire day after a semi hit a vehicle, burst into flames, and two women were killed. The driver of the semi is now saying the crash happened because his brakes gave out.

23-year-old Fatem Singh told El Paso Police that he was going about 55 mph on I-10 near the Sunland Park Drive exit when a car swerved in front of him. He said he hit his brakes, but they didn’t work.
Singh said his emergency brake also failed. The police report points out that Singh denied falling asleep at the wheel.

No charges have been filed against Singh, but the investigation remains open.

KFOX14 spoke with the president of the trucking company for which Singh works, but they would not say anything about the truck in question other than it was a brand-new 2016 model.
