In 1942, actress Greer Garson won the Oscar for her role in the movie, "Mrs. Miniver". Urban legend has it that she made a acceptance speech that lasted for over an hour. Actually, it lasted for 5 minutes and 45 seconds, which is the record for longest speech in the history of the Academy Awards. The shortest was 1 second,  made by director Alfred Hitchcock in 1968, who simply said, "Thank You", and walked off. In 2010, the Academy announced that speeches cannot run past 45 seconds, or run the embarrassment of having your microphone cut off..!!
