Authorities have confirmed that earlier this week a teenage boy was attacked by a shark in the shallow waters of Surfside Beach along the Texas Gulf coast.

According to reports, a 15-year-old boy was able to fight off the shark after it bit him on the lower portion of his leg. However, the shark continued to attack the boy, biting him in the left hand. Luckily, some friends from his church group were able assist him until emergency responders arrived on the scene.

After Surfside police bandaged the boys leg, he was then flown to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, where he is reportedly in stable condition and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Authorities are not certain exactly what kind of shark is responsible for the attack because they say there haven’t been any shark attacks in that particular area in nearly 25 years. Yet, Surfside Beach has experienced several shark attacks in the recent years.
