Lots of El Pasoans leave the city to go to college in Austin, and many of them go to the University of Texas at Austin. They become Longhorns, and now they're mourning the loss of their beloved Bevo.

The school uses different steers as their mascot, and after each one dies, there is an outpouring of emotion. When I lived in Austin, I saw people wearing T-shirts, holding wakes, and coming together for candlelight ceremonies to remember Bevo.

This Bevo, Bevo XIV, died Friday in his sleep at the ranch where he lived. After his cancer diagnosis, he was retired last week, so he didn't get much time at the ranch or in retirement, but hopefully it was good time. UT Austin officials say they are already looking for Bevo XV so the new mascot will be ready for the 2016 football season, the 100th anniversary of Bevo on the football sideline.
