Teen Suspended for Asking Miss America to Prom

For high school teens each year, asking someone to the prom can be a nerve wrecking experience. But for 18-year-old Patrick Farves, he didn’t just ask a regular classmate out this year. No, he set his eyes on Miss America Nina Davuluri and it cost him school suspension.

According to The York Daily Record, reigning Miss America Nina Davuluri was visiting Central York High School in Pennsylvania and was scheduled to talk to the student body and do a Q-and-A afterwards. Farves decided to ask her out to prom in front of the entire school and officials got wind of his plans and told him not to do it.

He did it anyway.

“I’m the kind of person who, if someone says I won’t do something, I’ll prove people wrong. I will,” he told the paper.

During the Q-and-A, Patrick — who wasn’t one of the students who were allowed to ask prescreened questions — got up to the mic and asked, “Miss America, I have a question.”

Davuluri reportedly laughed after Patrick mustered the courage to ask her to prom. He approached the stage to cheers from the audience and handed Davuluri a plastic flower.

The stunt has now cost Patrick three days of in-school suspension for defying the faculty.

The school released this response to the incident:

“It is not our practice to discipline a student for asking someone – even Miss America – to a school dance. However, it is our practice to set expectations for student behavior, to communicate those expectations and rules to students and families and to ensure those rules are followed within our schools. This practice is not uncommon and happens every day, multiple times a day, in schools, businesses and homes across America.”

Nevertheless, Patrick seems to be a hero within the student body, as several tweets with the hashtag #FreePatty have been posted asking the school to reconsider the suspension.

What do you think? Should Patrick be suspended for his stunt? Or did the school go too far for an innocent question?
