Look, I'm not an outdoorsy gal. I've never been camping. I don't understand the concept of skiing and getting cold and wet while flinging oneself down a mountain. About the only outdoor activity I like is gardening.

But having said that, I think if you like the outdoors, you should go to an overnight camp out at McKelligon Canyon. The Parks and Recreation Department holds these camp outs a couple of times a summer and this time it's at one of the prettiest, most interesting spots in El Paso.

McKelligon Canyon is rugged and desert-y and a beautiful place to be at night. The camp out starts at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 25, and goes through 10 a.m. the next morning.

Your family will get instruction on how to set up a tent and campsite and get outdoor cooking techniques and tips. There will be star gazing, storytelling, marshmallow roasting, archery, and a hike exploration.

You'll need to bring your own tents, food, drinks (no alcohol) and necessary camping supplies. You'll have to be there early because camp space locations will be on a first come, first serve basis. The registration fee is $5 per child (17 years of age and younger) and $10 per adult (18 years of age and older).

You can call the Parks and Recreation Department at (915) 820-9712 or go to elpasotexas.gov/parks for more information.
