One of west El Paso’s traffic problem areas is about to get worse before it gets better.

The Sunland Park Flyover ramp to I-10 East will be closed for 6 weeks beginning today (March 19), which means traveling through the Sunland Park Mall area will be more frustrating than normal.

In a news release, Texas Department of Transportation officials said the closure is necessary so crews can demolish and re-build the pavement that physically connects the ramp to Sunland Park Drive.

The entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will be inaccessible through at least the end of April, possibly longer

Until its completion, motorists traveling southbound on Sunland Park Drive who wish to enter I‐10 Eastbound will continue straight along Sunland Park Drive toward the signal at Paisano Drive; then turn left and enter I‐10 Eastbound using the entrance ramp.

As has been their mantra since the Go 10 Project began two years ago, TxDot officials recommended avoiding the area, and, if that’s not possible, taking alternate routes such as North Mesa Street, and Doniphan to Paisano then Executive to the I-10 East on-ramp.
