Drugs and politics don't mix, just ask Sunland Park city rep, Sergio Carrillo. Carrillo was pulled over this weekend on a routine traffic stop, and Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies say they thought something suspicious was going on in the vehicle, but Carrillo refused their request to search the car.

After deputies got a search warrant, they found an ounce of marijuana and paraphernalia in the car. During Monday's Sunland Park city council meeting, deputies arrested Carrillo. Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea said the arrest, which happened while the meeting was in executive session, was over in less than thirty seconds.

After the arrest, Carrillo was placed on administrative leave from Gadsden Independent School District where he works as a substitute teacher. Carrillo's seat on Sunland Park's city council is safe unless he is convicted of a felony.
