If you've been to KISS FM events at The Plaza Theatre in downtown El Paso - events like 'Wicked', and 'The Price Is Right Live', you know what a jewel The Plaza is.  What you might not know is that without one woman, The Plaza might have been destroyed, and turned into a parking lot!

One of the biggest success stories in El Paso history is the renovation of The Plaza Theatre.  It was once decaying and on the verge of being torn down to make way for a parking garage, but now it houses the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, concerts like the upcoming Bryan Adams Bare Bones Tour, plays, and the beloved Plaza Theatre Classic Film Festival every summer.

One of the driving forces behind bringing The Plaza back to life, is Betty MacGuire.  We got an email from a friend of hers, Janice Windle, a writer from El Paso, who tells us that she would like all of El Paso to write an email telling Mrs. MacGuire Happy Birthday:

"Mrs. Betty MacGuire Loves El Paso. This is her home.

Betty reads the newspapers to keep up with the concerns of her hometown. When she read there was a plan to destroy The Plaza Theatre for a parking lot, she stepped up in a moment that took personal courage. She gave the most important gift a person can give. She gave her voice and asked others to join together and make something very good happen for our city- The restoration of our beautiful Plaza Theatre.

Her dream has come true.

Now, Betty MacGuire’s birthday is being celebrated, and we would like to have El Pasoans send her greetings. Just a short email, just —Thank you and a name, but we need many voices to be heard. Please, I need for you to help me if you possibly can.

Emails wishing Mrs. MacGuire Happy Birthday can be sent to:
