A popular El Paso trainer was at the center of a SWAT situation in west El Paso last night (Monday, June 20).

The El Paso Police Department said 48-year-old Benjamin Ritter had barricaded himself in an apartment in the 5200 block of Carousel Drive around 6:30 Monday evening. Ritter had been placed on the El Paso’s Most Wanted list about 10 days ago on an outstanding warrant for aggravated robbery, engaging in organized criminal activity, and unlawful restraint. He had been arrested on a drug possession charge on May first.

Ritter barricaded himself inside the apartment after the U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force tried to arrest him. SWAT was called in immediately because they believed Ritter was armed.
A photo on his Facebook page showed him with multiple firearms and masks.

Ritter wouldn’t come out of the apartment until just before midnight. That meant that residents of the apartment complex, who were not allowed into their homes during the standoff, had to wait outside until the standoff was resolved.

One man whose girlfriend lives in the complex said Ritter was a fitness trainer at EP Fitness.

No one was injured during the standoff.
