Places to Ice Skate in El Paso – 2013
You would think that because El Paso is in the middle of a desert there wouldn’t be a lot of ice-skating choices. You would think that — but you’d be wrong. There are actually three places you can get your glide on around town. It used to be the only choice you had was the events center next to the County Coliseum, but this winter the Outlet Shoppes at El Paso in Canutillo and the new Fountains at Farah shopping center are also embracing the classic winter tradition.
The rink at the Outlet Shoppes is not an “ice” skating rink, per se. It’s a synthetic rink made of polymer material, so you’re not skating on actual ice. However, you do still use normal metal-bladed ice skates. It’s a bit on the small end, holding up to around 25 skaters at one time according to a KVIA news report .
The “Promenade Ice Pond” at the Fountains of Farah is much bigger with a capacity of about 175 skaters, and does offer skating on a sheet of ice. Both mall rinks are outdoors, so if exposure to the elements isn’t your style then the Coliseum rink is your only indoor alternative.
