New Mexico State University is moving forward with a plan to put a new building on 2.5 acres of university land just west of the Las Cruces Convention Center. The building is making way for a 120 room hotel next to the Las Cruces Convention Center.

The university will receive either $80,000 annually or a percentage of the hotel's gross revenue. Whichever totals higher for the year is what NMSU will receive. The four story hotel would face East University Avenue and be adjacent to the convention center. Earlier this year they did attempt to propose they build the hotel near the golf course and another to build east of the convention center, across Union Avenue.

But after consideration, both were thought to be less attractive locations because the hotel needed to have easy and immediate access for people attending events at the convention center as well as the Pan American Center. With the Pan Am being so close to I-25 the traffic would be an issue and this was a better fit.
