Juan Gabriel, one of Mexico's leading singer/songwriters and a true Borderland legend died Sunday, August 28, in Los Angeles. He was 66.

According to published reports, Gabriel died of a massive heart attack on Sunday morning while getting ready to go to the airport to fly here to El Paso for his scheduled show at the Don Haskins Center Sunday night.

Gabriel had just performed at The Forum in Los Angeles on Friday night.

His death shocked many around the world, but especially his fans here in the El Paso/Juarez area where he was so beloved. So many gathered outside his home on Avenida 16 de Septiembre in Juárez Sunday to pay their respects to the man affectionately known as "El Divo de Juárez" that police had to close off the street.

Gabriel was a member of the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame, and was nominated for Grammy's six times. Over the course of his career, he sold over 100 million records. His most recent work, Los Duo, was the top-selling Latin album of the year in 2015.
