Let's be honest and open with each other for just a moment. We all know that when you know better, you do better- and that being defensive accomplishes nothing.

Chances are pretty good that you've at some point participated in a balloon release of some sort. To remember a loved one lost, to celebrate a charitable cause, etc.

Balloon releases, while lovely, accomplish something nefarious and something I'm sure no good-hearted person wants to do. They kill wildlife and livestock. Cait Clarke was able to save her calves, but we will never now just how many animals of all sorts have died in this manner.

Animals, especially those that graze, like the colors of the balloons, assume they are something delicious, and end up choking on them.

This is something I've been passionate about for many years. My junior high in Lubbock wanted to do a balloon release for "drug awareness"- I'm pretty sure we were all aware of drugs anyway. A group of my friends and I got together and sat in the office for hours, refusing to leave before they agreed to call the release off. I was guilted and shamed by grown adults, "Do you WANT people to die of DRUGS?" No, and killing animals with balloon pieces ain't going to save them either. We persevered- the balloon release was called off. I don't know if we saved anyone's lifestock (and therefore livelihood) or if we saved any birds or other critters. But we did change minds. Always stand up for what you believe in, even if people try to make you a bad guy for it.
