It sounds like something out of a horror movie, but unfortunately it happened just a couple days ago in Las Cruces. An altercation between two men over a woman turned into one man falling to his death.

Sheriff's believe there was an altercation between Lopez-Perez and Vernon Clark when Clark took a tire iron out of the back of his truck and threw it at Perez. It hit Perez in the back of the head and he fell to the ground.

Pamela Barraza, Perez's girlfriend was present during the time of the altercation and tried to render aid to Perez. He was face down with the tire iron stuck in the back of his head. Barraza screamed for help and for someone to call an ambulance. When EMT's arrived on the scene Perez was pronounced dead on arrival.

Clark was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is being held at the Dona Ana Detention Center on a $250,000 secured bond.

UPDATE: Clark, 36, is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony. Clark is scheduled to appear for arraignment on March 14 before District Judge James T. Martin in 3rd Judicial District Court in Las Cruces.
