One of Sunland Park Mall’s biggest tenets will be closing its doors this year.

The Macy's at the west El Paso mall is among the 68 stores nationwide the company will be shutting down in 2017, according to a news release sent out by the department store.

Seventy-one employees will be affected by the El Paso store closure. In total more than ten-thousand jobs are going to be lost as Macy's tries to streamline operations and turn around its financial struggles.

The closing clearance sales at the Sunland Park Mall Macy's will begin Monday, January 9, and reportedly last anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks. It is believed the store will close for good soon after, although an exact date has not been disclosed.

Macy's is the second department store chain in as many days to announce it will be closing locations in El Paso. Kmart stated yesterday that it is closing two of its El Paso stores by April: the McRae location in east El Paso and the store on Dyer.

The El Paso closures are part of the 108 Kmart stores closing nationwide.
