The woman who fed the Borderland with her amazing Mexican food has died at the age of 98.
Lupe Benavides owned Chope's Bar and Café, and in the process built up a quite a legacy.
Lupe was born in Mexico, but came to the U.S. to live with her sister when she was two after her mother passed away.

She married her husband, José "Chope" Benavides, and became a fixture at the restaurant on Hwy. 28.
She and Jose took over Chope’s from his parents in the 40s. Lupe cooked and served patrons at the café into the 1980s, when her daughters took over.

Chope’s is one of those places that you should always take out-of-towners to when they visit. It’s funky, the food is great, and pretty much embodies the El Paso/Las Cruces area.

Our condolences and prayers go out to the Benavides family. Thank you Lupe for all your years of amazing food!
