New details are emerging about Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s sad split. While both camps initially denied any marital problems, rumors swirled since the divorce filing that Brand wasn’t getting along with Perry’s Christian parents. In addition, TMZ is reporting that Perry asked Brand to officially file for their divorce because she didn’t want to upset her infamously religious family.

Us Weekly provided more details of the bust up — including why they spent Christmas apart. ”She was like, ‘F— you. I’m going to do my own thing.’ Russell replied, ‘Fine, f— you too,’” a source told Us. Another sourced added, “They’ve fought since they met.” One major issue? Another pal told the mag, “Katy doesn’t think Russell respects her parents’ Christian beliefs or her friends.”

TMZ claims that the pair had been on the rocks for a few months and that both Brand and Perry made efforts to work it out before agreeing to divorce. Perry and Brand planned to divorce weeks ago, but neither wanted to be in Los Angeles when the papers were officially filed – which explains his trip to London and her Hawaiian beach frolic on Christmas.

Because Katy’s parents are evangelical Christians, she didn’t want to be the one to officially end file for her divorce,  because she was raised to believe that divorce is wrong.

Perry’s religious upbringing posed some predicaments elsewhere in her life. In her ‘Most Fascinating People’ interview with Barbara Walters, Perry revealed that she couldn’t listen to the pop music or watch much TV as a child — and that she had to call deviled eggs “angeled eggs.”

While the break up is sad, there may be a silver lining in the split. Perry had planned to take a year off of music to start a family with Brand — but now there may be hope for new (if more somber) music from the ‘One That Got Away‘ singer a bit sooner than we expected.
