The drug trafficking thriller Sicario opens this weekend and if Juárez Mayor Enrique Serrano has it his way, residents will steer clear of theaters showing it.

In a recent interview with the Norte newspaper, Serrano urged citizens not to see the movie about the war against drugs on the border because it “speaks ill of [Juárez]” and “hurts the image of Juarenses.”

The mayor also spoke to Canal 44 (XHIJ-TV) regarding his objections. He told the Juarez television station that the city isn't a violent place anymore like it was several years ago but that that's the image Sicario perpetuates. Serrano added that if the movie made it clear that's how it used to be, not how it is now, then he wouldn't have beef with it.

Although partially set in Juárez, Sicario was mostly filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The only shots of our area appear to be aerial and establishing shots.
