I'm sure you've heard about the detention camps for children who have arrived at the border either unaccompanied by an adult or with an undocumented adult. Those kids are being put into a detention center in Tornillo and our local congressman, Beto O'Rourke, is going to hold a Father's Day march on the location to bring attention the plight of these kids.

I'll be honest with you - for a very long time, I was a pretty staunch conservative. I believed that people needed to follow the immigration laws of our country and if they were apprehended at the border, well, then, tough cookies for them. But the hatred and ugliness displayed by the Trump administration - as seen in this video of a smirking, Attorney General Jeff Sessions who quoted the Bible to justify the disgusting policy of ripping kids away from their parents - has completely changed my mind about immigration. I still believe we need to have people follow the rule of law, but to have our leaders laugh in the face of the destruction of families? No. They are wrong and they need to be stopped.

The announced change in policy to separate kids from their parents even if they are coming to legally seek asylum is being used to scare people who, by and large, are fleeing violence and oppression in their native land.

Does that sound familiar?

It should.

That's what the first Americans did when they left their homes in Europe. They were fleeing violence and oppression in their country. I'm not saying we need to just fling open our borders, but I am saying that you need to look at your own kids and imagine them being taken away from you and put into tents in the desert, or taken hundreds of miles away from you even if they are 4 and 5 years old, without ever knowing if you will see them again.

This is wrong. And it needs to be stopped.

If you want to RSVP for the march, you can do it by clicking here. I don't think you need to, it is probably just to give them an idea as to how many marchers they can count on. There are more details on O'Rourke's Facebook page.
