It's the most wonderful time of the year -- tax season. And along with getting your return come the IRS scams and one is hitting hard in Alamogordo right now.

Alamogordo police are warning residents of the oldest trick in the book, the phone book that is. A phone scam is going out to random residents in Alamogordo and has been reported several times with people paying thousands of dollars they didn't have to.

Someone is calling around stating that they are a part of the IRS and telling the victims that they owe the IRS a large sum of money for back taxes. Police are warning that the caller gives them instructions on how to pay the back taxes through a money wiring system and threatens jail time if the victim does not comply within a given window of time.

This is where you know it is a scam, the IRS will never ask for money over the phone. If you do receive a call like this contact the authorities immediately. Make sure you know your stuff and research other IRS scams before becoming a victim.
