I Got My Mammogram Done — Have You?
Have you gotten your mammogram done this year?
‘Nope. It hurts too much.’ ‘I don’t have time.’ ‘I’m not sure if my insurance covers one.’
These are just some of the most common excuses for not getting a mammogram done, and they are all ridiculous. This is your health and your life we are talking about.
A few years ago, when I had my annual mammogram done, we took photos to show that you really can get one done without a huge amount of pain. Is it uncomfortable? Of course it is. Your breast are going to be compressed between two plates, but having said that, it’s only for about 10 seconds. I’m someone who bruises pretty easily, and in the 15 years I’ve gotten mammograms, I’ve never had any side effects from one. No bruising, no lingering pain, nothing to keep me from making sure that I got one the following year.
My family has a history of breast cancer, so not getting an annual exam and mammogram is out of the question for me. Knowledge is power, and a mammogram is just one piece of the puzzle that I won’t let slide.
Here is the mammogram machine. Looks scary, but it’s there to help save your life. I am well endowed, and my tissue is very dense, so that means extra squishing. If I can do it, so can you!
And here I am getting squished. See, no writhing in pain, just a moment’s discomfort.
The person doing the mammogram is always a woman. The room is quiet and private. You stand in front of the machine, put your boob on the plate, the mammographer gets the proper squish, you hold you breath for 10 seconds, and voila! You’re done! Okay, you have to get squished twice on each breast, so for 40 seconds each year, you’ll be a little uncomfortable. Suck it up and do it!
Don’t let the year pass without getting a mammogram if you are of the age that it is prescribed, and a PAP smear. Your life it too important, YOU are too important, to not get these life saving tests.
NOW HIT IT, SISTAHS!
