In honor of World Blood Donor Day this weekend, United Blood Services is holding a special blood drive for 9-year-old El Pasoan who is currently at Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Every year, on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day, which was established in 2004, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood, blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary life-saving gifts of blood.

This year, United Blood Services will be hosting blood drives at Cielo Vista, Bassett Center and Sunland Park Malls starting today, Friday through 7 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday.  Three blood donor sites will also be open on Saturday the 13th for a special WBDD celebration.

All blood drives this weekend will be in honor of Eduardo Torres, a 9 year old El Pasoan who attends Bill Sybert Elementary and is suffering for a genetic disorder called ADL.   He underwent a bone marrow transplant on April 10th in Houston and has received chemo and many blood transfusions. His mother and father, Brenda and Ernesto Carrillo invite you to come out this weekend in Eduardo’s honor and donate lifesaving blood to help other children and adults who are in need.

All donors will be treated to special giveaways that include a t-shirt and squeeze cow, ice cream and milk courtesy of Dairy Max and Price’s Creameries for National Dairy month, including free sandwiches from Rudy’s BBQ and a chance to win 4 tickets to Wet N Wild.
