We can't do a lot to help out in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey as it pounds the Texas coast and inland communities, but we can donate blood.

United Blood Services says there will be an increased need for blood across the Rio Grande Valley because of Harvey, and they need you to roll up your sleeves and help out. You can donate at UBS donor centers in El Paso at 1338 N. Zaragoza, 424 S. Mesa Hills Dr., or in Las Cruces at 1200 Commerce Dr.

Call 877-827-4376 or go to the UBS website, bloodhero.com, to make an appointment to donate. Plan on being their about an hour from check-in to refreshments. You can save a little time by doing your Fast Track Health History on the website.

To donate blood, you have to be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. If you are 16, parents or guardians will also have to sign a permission slip for the teen to be able to donate.
