El Paso Zoo Baby Orangutan Has a Name
Her name is Khaleesi!
First time primate papa Butch chose the name -- or rather, the box labeled Khaleesi -- during enrichment activities on Father's Day.
Initially, keepers selected four potential names; Moki, Eko, Khaleesi, and Pohon, and invited the public to vote for their favorite. Weeks of online "likes" and "shares" narrowed Butch's choice to Khaleesi and Moki.
The name is derived from the fictional Dothraki language in the "Game of Thrones" series. According to Game of Thrones Wiki, Khaleesi is a Dothraki title referring to the wife of the khal, which is a Dothraki warlord. Per the show's official pronunciation guide, "khaleesi" is pronounced "khal-EE-see". However, the linguist who developed the Dothraki language for the series has stated in interviews that the proper pronunciation is "KHAH-lay-see."
