El Paso Weekend Events – Greek Festival, Free Movies + More

Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso this weekend, August 22 – August 24, 2014. Some events are free, some will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

St. Nicholas Greek Festival – The 27th annual festival of Greek food and culture features a smorgasbord of Greek fare plus live Greek music and dances. 5 to 10 p.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, 124 S. Festival. $2 Admission. 833-0882

Friday at the Fire – Live music by local bands set against the ambiance of the Freedom Crossing at Ft. Bliss outdoor fireplace. 6 – 11 p.m. FREE. This week, Chris Baker (acoustic rock).

Alfresco! Fridays – Fresh-air performances from local bands playing various genres of music. 6 p.m. on the Convention Center Plaza. FREE. This week, Abe Mac Band (country). More Details

Damon Wayons – The actor best known for starring in the TV shows “My Wife and Kids” and “In Living Color” and movies like “Major Payne” and “The Last Boy Scout” returns to his stand-up comic roots. 8 p.m. at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. Ticket prices vary. More Details

Movies in the Canyon – Family friendly, relatively current movies screened on an inflatable screen set up on the stage of the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. Approximately 8:30 p.m., weather permitting. FREE. No outside food or beverages allowed. Popcorn, soft drinks and other snacks sold at the concession stand. Tonight, “Monsters Inc”. 915-534-0665

SATURDAY:

Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 7:30 a.m. to noon. Downtown Artist and Farmers Market – The market offers the chance to shop for original arts and crafts and regionally grown produce in an outdoor setting while enjoying entertainment featuring local artists, food vendors and free activities for the entire family. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Plaza District (near The Garden Restaurant) along Anthony Street. Summer Meltdown Lowrider Car Show & Concert – Lowrider Magazine presents the fully sanctioned car show that includes a kid expo, bike/stunt riders, and concerts by Lighter Shade of Brown and Mellow Man Ace, among others. Doors open at 3 p.m. at the El Paso Country Coliseum, 4100 E. Paisano. Admission is $25. More Details

Saturdays in the Park– Bring blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic basket and enjoy a different live band at various parks throughout the city. 6 – 9 p.m. This week, Exito performs at McKelligon Canyon Pavillion. More Details

The Fountains at Farah Sunset Sounds – Local and regional band perform in The Promenade at the Fountains for “sunset’ shoppers,” weather permitting, from 7pm to 9pm. Blankets and lawn chair encouraged, food and beverages available. This week, Hope Riot. More Details

The Music of Queen Performed by The El Paso Symphony Orchestra – The El Paso Symphony Orchestra accompanied by a full rock band and vocalist honors the legendary band with performances of classic Queen songs. 8 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre. Ticket prices vary. More Details

The Doubletree by Hilton presents Saturday Night Movies on the Terrace – You don’t have to be a guest in the hotel to enjoy the movie. Tonight, “A Night at the Museum”. 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, on the Sunset Terrace located on the 7th floor of Doubletree Hotel, 600 N. El Paso St. in downtown El Paso. District 3 Movies Under the Stars – Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks and watch a movie in the park, weather permitting. This week’s movie is “The Nut Job”. FREE. 8:30 p.m. at San Juan Park, located at the cross-streets of Glenwood and Tamburo. More Details

Zin Valle Vineyards Free Music Sundays – Bring your family and friends, pack a picnic and enjoy the afternoon at Zin Valle Vineyards. FREE entry, wine tasting and music. 12 Noon to 5 p.m.This week, Dan Lambert and the Double Drum Trio. More Details

Music on the Patio at La Vina Winery – Bring your favorite wine, snack, or a picnic and enjoy an afternoon of FREE entertainment on the lawn. 1:30pm – 4:30 pm. 4201 S. NM Highway 28 in La Union, N.M. one mile north of Vinton Road on Highway 28.  575-882-7632

Tonic and Vertical Horizon Concert – The rock bands best known for “If You Could Only See” and “Everything You Want” respectively, perform at the Socorro Entertainment Center, 11200 Santos Sanchez off Socorro Road, 4.5 miles southeast of Loop 375.
