Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso this weekend, July 25 – July 27, 2014. Some events are free, the others will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

Friday at the Fire – Live music by local bands set against the ambiance of the Freedom Crossing at Ft. Bliss outdoor fireplace. 6 – 11 p.m. FREE. This week, Candice Reyes Quintet (Jazz).

Alfresco! Fridays – Fresh-air performances from local bands playing various genres of music. 6 p.m. on the Convention Center Plaza. FREE. This week, Sha’Vonne (pop, R&B). More Details

UTEP Dinner Theatre Presents ‘Chess’ – UTEP Dinner Theatre closes the season with the musical about two chess grandmasters, an American and a Soviet, fighting over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other, all in the context of a politically-driven, Cold War-era tournament between the two men. 7 p.m., 2nd Floor UTEP’s Union Building West. El Paso Chihuahuas Baseball – El Paso’s Triple A team hosts the Fresno Grizzlies. Replica of Southwest University Park to the first 2,000 fans with paid admission. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Southwest University Park on Santa Fe Street in Downtown El Paso. Ticket prices vary. More Details

Movies on the Lawn – UTEP’s annual summer film series features movies shown outdoors on an 18-foot inflatable screen. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, but leave your alcohol and glass containers at home. Concessions available. This week’s featured film is “Brave”. Movie starts at approximately 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, at Kidd Field on the UTEP Campus. FREE. More Details

Movies in the Canyon – Family friendly, relatively current movies screened on an inflatable screen set up on the stage of the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. Approximately 8:30 p.m., weather permitting. FREE. No outside food or beverages allowed. Popcorn, soft drinks and other snacks sold at the concession stand. Tonight, “Smurfs 2 ” and “The Lego Movie”. 915-534-0665

SATURDAY:

Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 7:30 a.m. to noon. Downtown Artist and Farmers Market – The market offers the chance to shop for original arts and crafts and regionally grown produce in an outdoor setting while enjoying entertainment featuring local artists, food vendors and free activities for the entire family. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Plaza District (near The Garden Restaurant) along Anthony Street. Collective Soul – The nineties rock band best known for the chart toppers “Shine,” “Gel,” and “December” perform an all-ages show at the Socorro Entertainment Center, 11200 Santos Sanchez, off Socorro Road, 4.5 miles southeast of Loop 375. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts around 9 p.m. FREE 21 and over, $10 20 and under. More Details

Dancing In the City – The outdoor dance/concert series includes a dance lesson at 7:00 p.m. and a live music performance from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. In the Convention Center Plaza next to Abraham Chavez Theatre. FREE. This week, Tango Noir.

The City of Socorro Presents Movies Under the Stars – Bring your own blankets and/or lawn chairs and enjoy the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz” under the stars. Concessions will be available for purchase. FREE. 8:15 p.m. at Bulldog Championship Park, 316 Buford Rd.

The Doubletree by Hilton presents Saturday Night Movies on the Terrace – You don’t have to be a guest in the hotel to enjoy the movie. Tonight, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”. 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, on the Sunset Terrace located on the 7th floor of Doubletree Hotel, 600 N. El Paso St. in downtown El Paso. FREE admission; cash bar and dinner menu available. 532-8733

Movies Under the Stars – Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks and watch a movie in the park, weather permitting. This week’s movie is “The Lorax” 8:30 p.m. at Hidden Valley Park (a.ka. Cowboy Park), 200 Coconut Tree Lane. FREE

Horizon City Movies in the Park – Relatively current movies shown on an inflatable screen, weather permitting. Blankets or lawn chairs allowed and you can bring your own snacks or purchase concessions from the Horizon City Police Explorers, but alcohol is prohibited. This week’s movie is “Gravity”. FREE. 8:30 p.m. at Corky Corcoran Park, located just off Horizon Boulevard, across from Horizon Star Bakery. More Details

Melodies at the Park – This annual series highlights a variety of local acts while showcasing some of the city’s parks. Bring your lounge chairs and enjoy an evening of music at the park.
