El Paso Weekend Events – Free Movies, Free Concerts + More

Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso this weekend, July 11 – July 13, 2014. Some events are free, the others will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

Friday at the Fire – Live music by local bands set against the ambiance of the Freedom Crossing at Ft. Bliss outdoor fireplace. 6 – 11 p.m. FREE. This week, Prime ’80s Band.

Alfresco! Fridays – Fresh-air performances from local bands playing various genres of music. 6 p.m. on the Convention Center Plaza. FREE. This week, Exito (Tejano). More Details

UTEP Dinner Theatre Presents ‘Chess’ – UTEP Dinner Theatre closes the season with the musical about two chess grandmasters, an American and a Soviet, fighting over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other, all in the context of a politically-driven, Cold War-era tournament between the two men. 7 p.m., 2nd Floor UTEP’s Union Building West. El Paso Chihuahuas Baseball – El Paso’s Triple A team hosts the Salt Lake Bees. Jersey Pin Collector Series #5 to the first 2,000 fans with paid admission. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Southwest University Park on Santa Fe Street in Downtown El Paso. Ticket prices vary. More Details

Movies on the Lawn – UTEP’s annual summer film series features movies shown outdoors on an 18-foot inflatable screen. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, but leave your alcohol and glass containers at home. Concessions available. This week’s featured film is “The Lego Movie”. Movie starts at approximately 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, at Kidd Field on the UTEP Campus. FREE. More Details

Movies in the Canyon – Family friendly, relatively current movies screened on an inflatable screen set up on the stage of the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. Approximately 8:30 p.m., weather permitting. FREE. No outside food or beverages allowed. Popcorn, soft drinks and other snacks sold at the concession stand. SATURDAY:

Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 7:30 a.m. to noon. Downtown Artist and Farmers Market – The market offers the chance to shop for original arts and crafts and regionally grown produce in an outdoor setting while enjoying entertainment featuring local artists, food vendors and free activities for the entire family. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Plaza District (near The Garden Restaurant) along Anthony Street. El Paso Mudd Music Festival – Events include Jeep Mudd Racing, Co-Ed Mudd Volleyball, Off-Road Car and Truck Show, Female Mudd Wrestling, music headliners and other entertainment at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta. More Details

Let Freedom Sing Free Concert Series with Parmalee – Country rock band best known for their #1 hit “Carolina” hosts the third show in the Let Freedom Sing concert series on Ft. Bliss. 7 p.m. at Fort Bliss’s Freedom Crossing’s event lawn. FREE. More Details

The Doubletree by Hilton presents Saturday Night Movies on the Terrace – You don’t have to be a guest in the hotel to enjoy the movie. Tonight, “The Sandlot”. 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, on the Sunset Terrace located on the 7th floor of Doubletree Hotel, 600 N. El Paso St. in downtown El Paso.
