Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso over the Memorial Day weekend, May 23 – May 26, 2014. Some events are free, the others will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

Balloonfest Balloon Glow and Fireworks Display – Hot air balloons participating in Balloonfest will light up their burners and glow in the night sky while tethered to the ground. A fireworks display will be part of the festivities. In addition, attendees will be given glowing helium balloons to release in memory of our nation’s soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. 8 – 10 p.m. outside the gates of Wet N’ Wild Waterwold, 8804 S. Desert in Anthony, Texas. FREE.

Moore’s Greater Shows Carnival – Rides, games and of course, carnival food! 5 p.m.- midnight in the Cowtown Boots parking lot, 11401 Gateway Blvd W, between Lee Trevino and George Dieter. Admission is FREE, ride tickets are $1 or $25 for a wristband good for unlimited rides. More Details

Alfresco! Fridays – Fresh-air performances from local bands playing various genres of music. 6 p.m. No outside food or beverages allowed. No pets allowed. Still downtown, but now on the Convention Center Plaza. This week, This week, Brown Betty (classic rock). More Details

Let Freedom Sing Free Concert Series with Rodney Atkins - Country music star Rodney Atkins kicks off the Let Freedom Sing concert series on Ft. Bliss. 7 p.m. at Fort Bliss’s Freedom Crossing’s event lawn. FREE. No coolers or outside food and beverages permitted. More Details

UTEP Dinner Theatre Presents ‘Les Miserables’ – The award-winning musical based on the novel of the same name returns by popular demand. 7 p.m., 2nd Floor UTEP’s Union Building West. Ticket prices vary. More Details

El Paso County Presents Movies by the Lake - The two-movie outdoor family series features first run films shown on an inflatable screen set up near the Ascarate Lake waterfront. Tonight’s movie is “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”. Food trucks will be on site. 8 p.m. in Ascarate Park across from the pavilion on R.E. Thomason Road. El Paso Playhouse Presents ‘A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody’ – El Paso’s Longest Running Community Theater presents its summer production of “A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody,” described as “an homage to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 1940s.” Showtime is 8 p.m. at the El Paso Playhouse, 2501 Montana. Gipsy Kings Concert - The world renowned group famous for its rumba flamenca style, with pop influences performs an all-ages show. Farmer's Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 7:30 a.m. to noon.
