The El Paso Police Department is mourning one of its own.

Officer David Ortiz passed away Monday from injuries he suffered in a multi-vehicle crash last Thursday afternoon.

According to a city press release, the nine year veteran of the department was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Lee Trevino and Vista del Sol Drive when he was rear-ended by a Kia, causing Ortiz to be thrown off his motorcycle. The collision caused a chain reaction that damaged two other vehicles and resulted in the Kia bursting into flames, as well as fire damage to the officer's motorcycle.

KFOX 14 reported that Ortiz was trapped under the car until others at the scene were able to pull him out. He was transported to Del Sol where he remained in critical condition until passing away Monday afternoon.

My condolences to his family, friends, and fellow police officers. May God bring them comfort and healing.
