El Paso Museum of Archaeology Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

The El Paso Museum of Archaeology is celebrating Native American Heritage Month this November by hosting a couple of weekend activities to honor indigenous cultures, specifically the Tiguas of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.

Festivities begin with the first Tigua Heritage Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology. The museum and the Tigua Cultural Center will host free activities that will focus on the cultural and historical importance of the Tigua tribe. Some of the activities include:

• Archery and Atl-Atl demonstrations
• Tigua bread and chile sampling
• Paper plate gourds
• Dreamcatcher crafting
• Tigua dances
• Medicine bags and sand painting

On Saturday, November 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the El Paso Museum of Archaeology will host a free winter storytelling event with Alex Mares who is a Native American storyteller and interpreter, who will tell stories which are traditionally told in winter by Navajo, Pueblo and Apache tribes. The storytelling will be done outside, and there will be complimentary refreshments for those who attend.
