Comic-Con 2013 to Premiere Superhero Short Film Starring Lizzy Caplan and Ron Livingston

Although San Diego Comic-Con is traditionally known for its massive panels celebrating the most-anticipated films and most-popular TV shows in the geek world, it also plays host to countless other projects, many of which often seem to get lost. Hopefully, that won’t happen to ‘The Sidekick,’ a new superhero-themed short film that will premiere at Comic-Con 2013 and has some pretty big ambitions.

Although the short isn’t headlined by any household names, it features plenty of likable comics and actors, including Ron Livingston, Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr. The lead role belongs to Rob Benedict, who plays a past-his-prime sidekick to a famous superhero. Here’s how the Hollywood Reporter describes the film:

‘The Sidekick’ centers on a 40-year-old career sidekick, Max McCabe (Benedict), now past his prime in the fast-paced world of superhero-dom. When he is unceremoniously fired by his boss, Captain Wonder (Livingston), Max has no choice but to somehow find a place for himself in the regular world.

Between the synopsis and the trailer, ‘The Sidekick’ looks like it could be a promising piece of entertainment and a fun parody of superhero stories in general. The fact that it was obviously made for a reasonable (i.e. low) budget suggests that the plan to turn it into a series (either online or on cable) is completely and totally doable. The important thing is that it’s, you know, funny. If people like it at Comic-Con, there’s a strong chance we’ll get to see more of this in the near future.

The panel and premiere will, naturally, feature members of the cast and crew. If you’re attending Comic-Con and this sounds like something up your alley, be at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront’s Indigo Ballroom on Thursday, Jul. 18 at 3:00 p.m.
