Should skateboarding be restricted Downtown? It's something City Council is considering.

Council will be holding public meetings and listening to feedback this week regarding amending the ordinance that would limit the areas downtown where people can ride a skateboard or bicycle, or roller skate.

Specifically, it wants to restrict their use in the Civic Center Plaza and the Arts Festival Plaza, as well as the San Jacinto Plaza, Sidewalk Café Areas, and the entire area of the Downtown Management District.

According to the agenda item, the changes are needed “to protect the health, safety of the community and public property.”

The first public meeting is being held on Tuesday, August 9, at 5:30 p.m. at the Armijo Branch Library, 620 E. Seventh St.

Additional discussions will be held Wednesday, August 10, at 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium of the Main Regional Branch Library at 501 N. Oregon St., and Thursday, August 11, at noon at the Armijo Branch Library.
