Cool down this Father’s Day weekend at the El Paso Zoo and watch the animals enjoy ice pop enrichment on Saturday and Sunday.

The Zoo animals will enjoy ice pop enrichment treats throughout the weekend which not only cool off the animals but provides mental and physical stimulation in their daily lives.

Visitors will also help new daddy Butch, celebrate Father’s Day when he selects the baby orangutan’s name at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at the Zoo. Butch will make the final baby name selection during an enrichment activity. To welcome the newest addition to the orangutan family, people may donate needed items from the baby registry list or elpasozoo.org/babyshower.

The orangutan keepers chose four of their favorite names after the baby was born April 23. After a community vote, the Zoo has narrowed the baby names down to the top two.

The top two baby names are:

  • Moki: Ancient Southwest Pueblo, meaning step (as in a positive step for orangutan conservation)
  • Khaleesi: meaning queen (from the fictional Dothraki language in the “Game of Thrones” series)

Zoo visitors will also be able to cool off this weekend with special frozen treats, like Fruitiki popsicles, ice cones, Dippin’ Dots, ice cream cones, ice cold sodas, bomb pops and more from the new Zoo’s newest concession stand, the “Icehouse.”

Guests can also take their swimsuits to splash around the Hunt Family Desert Spring splash pad and monkey around the well-shaded Foster Tree House Playground which will be open all weekend for all to enjoy and play as they discover a cool weekend summer adventure at the Zoo.
