Princess Leia is gone. The actress, Carrie Fisher best known for her role as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars has died.

Carrie Fisher had suffered a heart attack earlier this week while flying from London to Los Angeles and quickly was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Reports soon after came in saying that she was in stable condition. However, this morning a spokesman for the family released a statement to PEOPLE on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd saying:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Carrie Fisher is the daughter of legendary entertainers Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher.

In her most recent appearances Fisher was promoting her new book, The Princess Diarist. Her memoir details her affair with co-star Harrison Ford at the young age of 19 when she began filming the first installment of the movie franchise Star Wars back in 1977.

Fisher is survived by her mom Debbie Reynolds, her daughter Lourd and beloved French bulldog, Gary.
