Six Dr. Seuss children's books just got canceled, prompting immediate sellouts, price hikes, and getting pulled off shelves at bookstores everywhere, including in El Paso.

Yesterday, in a stunning move by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the business that preserves the author's legacy said it is retiring six books from the beloved children’s authors catalog due to concerns over racist and insensitive imagery.

In a statement Tuesday, Dr. Seuss Enterprises commented on the decision saying:

These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong. Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families.

Since the announcement yesterday morning, copies of the six books have become a hot commodity (Ala last month's GameStop trading frenzy), prompting immediate sellouts, price hikes, and getting pulled off bookstore shelves everywhere, including El Paso.

As news rippled across social media, El Pasoans quickly hit up all the Barnes & Noble bookstores in town, selling out minutes after opening their doors Tuesday morning. Lucky El Pasoans even took advantage of the giant bookseller's Buy 1, Get 1 50% deal.

Curious, I called up Jud Burgess, owner of Brave Books, a local bookstore located in Central El Paso that offers a bounty of titles, including a whole kid's section featuring many Dr. Seuss books.

We discussed the book frenzy during the phone call, and Burgess told me that he initially had several copies of the books on sale but ultimately chose to pull them off the shelves altogether.

Hours later, Amazon was no longer selling any of the books in question as the publishers immediately ceased all the books' licensing and publications.

However, when I browsed eBay, prices were sky-rotting with a copy of Dr. Suess' Scrambled Eggs Super! going for a mind-blowing $5,000 +.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get a copy; Burgess of Brave Books predicts this “bubble” will soon play out and mentioned that they're a ton of these books circulating out there, and once this all calms down, we might start seeing them pop up again.
