Bus Driver Suffers Fatal Heart Attack On I-10 But His Last Move Probably Saved Lives

The driver of a Los Paisanos bus suffered a heart attack earlier Monday morning, but managed to pull his bus to the side of the freeway, possibly saving many lives in the process. El Paso Police say 74-year-old Benjamin Galaviz-Gomez hit the center median on I-10 east right before the Cotton exit, and didn't hit any other vehicles. There were no passengers in the bus at the time. EMS took Galaviz-Gomez to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Los Paisanos officials say that Galaviz-Gomez had recently had a physical. He was coming back from a run to Dallas when he suffered the heart attack. The fact that he had the presence of mind to pull his bus to the side of the freeway and avoid an even bigger accident while he was suffering a major medical emergency is so poignant.
