A man wanted for running over a Sunland Park police officer during an attempted traffic stop on Friday has been arrested.

Jaime Sandate, 41, was taken into custody at his home in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on Saturday, and charged with attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated battery on a peace officer and aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

According to published reports, Lt. Arturo Holguin attempted to pull over a black Ford Explorer Friday evening after he observed the driver running a stop sign and driving erratically.

Instead of cooperating, the driver led Lt. Holguin on a chase through a few streets in Sunland Park before driving into a cul-de-sac. As Holguin started to get out of his car, the driver of the cornered vehicle backed up, and ran the officer over as he made his escape. Video of the incident taken by Holguin’s body camera can be seen above.

Sunland Park Police Chief Jaime Reyes told the El Paso Times Holguin suffered a sprained ankle.
