When Justin and Matt from Blue October performed their acoustic set for us this week, Justin described it as a short history of his life. He started with the innocent love song "Calling You," but things took a darker turn in his life with substance abuse.

The same girl he wrote "Calling You" for was the also the same girl for whom he wrote "Hate Me." Here, Justin strips down the song to the way he said he wrote it -- sitting with a single guitar. The result is a chilling, painfully honest piece of work that had the audience in tears. (Seriously, we had to find tissues.)

The story isn't done yet, though. While things got dark, it's important to remember they also got better. Keep an eye out for the remaining two performances from this edition of Listener's Lounge.
