If your pet needs a microchip, this weekend, you could get one for free.

El Paso Animal Services will be offering free microchips to the first 100 pets at the Parks & Recreation Pet Festival beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 23, at the Westside Community Park. Animal Services wants to have a 90% live-release rate of its pets in the facility, but they are still dealing with thousands of lost pets that come to the the Animal Services Center every month. Those pets could be reunited much easier with their owners if they are microchipped.

If you want your pet to get microchipped, you have to have a valid photo ID and have your pet or pets on a leash or in a crate when you go to the event. Microchips will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Animal Services Animal Protection team will also be providing free microchip checks to pets that already have a microchip, to ensure microchips are updated with correct contact information. That's super important because if you don't have updated information, they'll have to track you down and that takes time.

This isn't the only free microchip event. Animal Services will hold more throughout the spring. You can keep up on when the next free microchip event is by going to Animal Services website at ElPasoAnimalServices.org.
